Patrick Newell was born on March 27, 1932 in Hadleigh, Suffolk, England as Patrick David Newell. He was an actor, known for The Avengers (1961), Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson (1980) and Doctor Who (1963). He appeared in four Sherlock Holmes films and /or television episodes, each of them starring a different actor as Holmes.
He was a massively overweight character actor, best known for his role of 'mother' in The Avengers (1961).
He was educated at Taunton School and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
He famously defined himself as an "actor with a weight problem - the more he diets, the less work he seems to get".
He was originally cast in Carry On Sergeant (1958) but when he turned up on the first morning he saw that the army sergeant who was going to drill the actors for the film was the same one that had drilled him when he was in the army and said that he wasn't going to go through that again and left. He was married to Derina House. He died on July 22, 1988 in Essex, England.
